GIS Day 2006
This is the 8th year that Delaware County is celebrating the Geography Awareness Week and GIS Day in Delaware, Ohio. On November 13th 2006, over 400 students attended the GIS Day demonstrations and Map Gallery at Dempsey Middle school in Delaware, Ohio.
The Geography Awareness Week is sponsored by the National Geographic Society, the American Association of Geographers (AAG), Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI), the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA), and the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS). Since 1987, the National Geographic Society has sponsored Geography Awareness Week to promote geographic literacy in schools, communities, and organizations, with a focus on the education of children. This event was intended to promote the understanding of geography in schools around the world.
As a user of GIS technology Delaware County Auditor’s DALIS Project assisted the National Geographic Society, ESRI, AAG, URISA, and UCGIS in bringing this technology to Delaware County in the form of a 7 hour Open-House and a Map Gallery that illustrated how geography is part of our everyday lives. These sessions included a Map Gallery and Live demonstrations. The Map Gallery included various maps from Delaware County’s different Government Entities using GIS Technology. Live demos of functional applications of this technology in Delaware County as well as elsewhere in the nation were also demonstrated.
The Map Gallery participants included DALIS Project staff, Lux Phatak of the Delaware County General Health District, and Liz Mather with the Delaware County Soil and Water Conservation District. We would like to sincerely thank the Dempsey Middle school's teachers, administrators and specially Mr. Reg Hollinger.
