Delaware County 2008 Digital Orthophotos

For the fourth time, Delaware County was flown in April of 2008 and conventional Orthophotos at 6 inch pixel resolution were created. Previous Orthophotos were taken on April 1997, 2002, and 2006. The 2008 imagery was collected by Woolpert from Dayton, Ohio.

The 6 inch pixel resolution color orthophotography can be displayed on DALIS Web application as well as on DVD sets. The imagery on the DVD set is in MrSID format. The DVD set also includes two free viewer programs, ExpressView and MrSID Viewer. The following provides more detailed information regarding the content of the DVD set as well as information on using the MrSID files.

You can place an order for the DVD set by contacting the DALIS Project office by either calling us at 740-833-2070 or send an email. The cost of the DVD set is $10.

Content of the Ortho DVD Set:

Content of DVD 1:

1) North Half MrSID file (GEN3) 50 Compression

2) South Half MrSID file (GEN3) 50 Compression

Content of DVD 2:

2) Countywide MrSID file (GEN3) 100 Compression

3) ExpressView Browser Plug-In

4) MrSID Viewer

Note: The GEN2 MrSID file format (included on DVD2) is an older version of SID file created by Lizardtech. It is included to allow the use of software that does not recognize the new version of SID file (GEN3).

All images are accompanied by a .swd file. This file includes the coordinate system information which is: State Plane Coordinate System, Zone 4967, Ohio North, NAD 83 (HARN), Units are in Feet

How can I view MrSID files?

There are several ways to view the Orthophotos (in MrSID format) in this package.

1) Install either the ExpressView browser plug-in or the MrSID Viewer software included on DVD 2.

ExpressView:
Browser plug-in which allows you to view, print, and export MrSID files in your Internet Explorer, Netscape, or Safari browser. In order to install the plug-in navigate to DVD 2 and double click the exview_setup file and follow the instructions on the screen. After the plug-in is installed you can double click any MrSID file on the DVDs or saved to your hard drive and it will open in your web browser. The plug-in will allow you to pan, zoom in or out, measure, print, or convert MrSID files to TIFF, JPEG, GIF, BMP, or PNG. You need to right click on the image and "save as" to convert it to the above formats. An extensive help file can also be accessed by clicking the “?” icon.

MrSID Viewer:

Please note that only GEN2 MrSID files are compatible with MrSID Viewer software. In order to install the viewer navigate to DVD 2 and double click the MrSIDViewerSetup.exe file and follow the instructions on the screen. After the program is installed go to Start --> Programs, MrSID Viewer and load the program. At this point, you can click on the open file icon and navigate to where you have stored your MrSID file and load the file. Please note that copying the file to your hard drive will dramatically improve the speed of display and printing. The viewer will allow for the display, zooming in and out, panning, measuring, printing, and converting to TIFF file at various resolutions (which allows for using the imagery in other applications) An extensive help file can be accessed by clicking the "?" icon.

There are several other free MrSID viewers and you can search for them on Google's web site.

2) MrSID files can also be viewed directly in the ArcGIS Environment. When MrSID images are taken into ArcGIS Environment, all other data layers in our database can be overlaid with them.

Troubleshooting

ArcGIS 9x Users:

When loading the SID files into ArcMAP you may get the following warning message:

You can simply click the Close button and ignore the warning.

ArcView 3X Users:

Please note that ArcView 3.2, 3.2A, and 3.3 users need to download the latest MrSID extension to be able to view the GEN3 MrSID files. To download click here. As in any other ArcView 3X extensions you need to unzip the .dll file and copy it into \ESRI\AV_GIS30\ARCVIEW\BIN32 folder. You will need to overwrite to old .dll file.

AutoCAD Users:

The MrSID files cannot be opened directly in AutoCAD. However, users who have "AutoCAD Map" application will be able to open the SID files directly. As in the past, you can use either of the free viewers included on DVD2 to convert the SID file to TIFF format and then import the TIFF file into AutoCAD.
